The first North American gran fondo to be cancelled due to coronavirus is the GFNY World Championship race on 17 May in New York City.
The promoter announced the cancellation via their website:
“The 10th GFNY World Championship NYC was postponed to May 16, 2021. Existing registrations remain active.
Riders who are registered for the race received further detailed information from gfny.cc by email. Unfortunately there are no refunds, transfers to another person or another event of GFNY entries.”
The event is one of the largest gran fondo races in North America with over 5000 worldwide participants and awards $10,000 to anyone who can break the course record.
No world on the fate of other GFNY events around the world, except GFNY Italia on 4 April which has already been cancelled.
The 2021 GFNY World Championship race is already scheduled for 16 May 2021 in New York City.
