Medical advisers to Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte have recommended the cancellation of all sporting events in Italy for the next 30 days to help contain rapidly spreading coronavirus according to a report by SB Nation/Vox Media.
The ban on sporting evens includes both amateur and professional cycling races with this weekend’s amateur Gran Fondo Strade Bianche and professional Strade Bianche races in Tuscany now at very high risk of cancellation.
While other reports indicate the events will go on as planned, the source of that information is the promoter, RCS, who is likely trying to be optimistic, rather than realistic like the Italian government.
EF Pro Cycling Team has already pulled out of Strade Bianche and many amateurs are not likely to take the risk of traveling from abroad to Italy for a gran fondo race.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte is expected to make a final decision on Wednesday.
