Arkansas State Police said 54-year old cyclist Jim Krause died in an accident at the Big Dam Bridge 100 gran fondo ride Saturday morning in Little Rock, Arkansas USA.

The accident occured on Highway 300, near Wye Mountain when Krause tumbled down a 30-foot embankment.  He was pronounced dead at the scene by the Pulaski County Coroner.

Witnesses told State Police they heard a loud “pop” come from Krause’s bike before he tumbled down the embankment.

Krause was an experienced cyclist and President of River Valley Cycling club in Fort Smith, Arkansas.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the rider’s family and loved ones, and all those impacted by this tragic event. This is a difficult time for our entire cycling community,” said Fred Phillips, Executive Director of the race.

Krause is survived by his wife and three children  A Go Fund Me page has been set up to help with funeral expenses.  On the page Eric Watkins wrote, “Jim was the real deal and will be missed. He touched many lives with his smile and encouragement. We are blessed to have had him in our lives.”

Over 3500 riders from 36 states took part in the event, the biggest cycling event in Arkansas.  It is 100 miles long and rides across the longest bridge built for bicycle traffic in North America – Big Dam Bridge at 4226 feet long.
