Nearly five weeks after a hit-and-run crash left 16-year-old Texas mountain bike racer Walker Carroll with life-threatening injuries, authorities have made an arrest.

Texas Department of Public Safety officers arrested Adam Wiley, 47, of Waco on 11 March after obtaining a warrant. DPS did not disclose what evidence in the hit-and-run case led them to Wiley, but he faces a felony charge of failure to stop and render aid causing serious bodily injury, as well as a misdemeanor count of driving without a valid license and without insurance. He has been booked into McLennan County Jail with a bond hearing pending.

The charges relate to the 6 February crash near Hallsburg, where a westbound Chevrolet Silverado struck Walker from behind reportedly at over 70mph and fled the scene, leaving the teenage bike racer lying critically injured on the roadside. A passing nurse stopped to help stabilize Walker until emergency services arrived. He was transported to Baylor Scott & White Hillcrest Medical Center, where surgeons performed emergency brain surgery and an eight-hour spinal procedure, fusing his vertebrae from T4 to T12 permanently.

Walker’s recovery has been an emotional rollercoaster for his family. After showing encouraging progress, he was transferred to a rehabilitation center in Austin, only to suffer a setback when fluid built up on his brain, causing cognitive decline.

He returned to Hillcrest, underwent further surgery to drain the fluid and replace the portion of skull removed during initial emergency treatment, and once again began showing signs of improvement.

Walker’s father Dan Carroll has kept supporters updated via the family’s CaringBridge page – now with over 55,000 views – where the cycling community can offer support to teenager and his family during this difficult time.
