Phoenix, Arizona USA police report 26-year-old amateur cyclist and 2x USA Triathlon Collegiate National Champion Hannah Rose Henry was on a training ride last Sunday morning in south Phoenix when she was allegedly run over and killed by a vehicle driven by a drug addict, who fled the scene.
“When officers arrived at the scene, they located the adult female, later identified as Hannah Rose Henry, in critical condition. The Phoenix Fire Department arrived on the scene and pronounced her deceased,” Phoenix Police said. “The driver of the vehicle involved did not remain at the scene.”
According to court documents, using video from the scene police tracked down the vehicle and driver at a nearby home, discovering pieces of Hannah’s clothing still stuck under the vehicle. The driver, 46 year-old Eric Hodge, then tried to unsuccessfully evade and escape from officers before being captured and arrested.
Court documents also reveal Hodge admitted to smoking fentanyl before he got in the vehicle that morning, telling police he recalled seeing “a girl on a 10-speed bicycle” while he was driving and thought he “hit a fire hydrant” while on his way to buy more fentanyl.
Hannah, a Canadian originally from British Columbia, won USA Triathlon Collegiate National Championship titles in 2017 and 2018. In 2019 she competed at the 2019 Pan Am Games in Lima, Peru, earning a silver medal in the triathlon mixed relay for team Canada.
So far Arizona prosecutors have charged Hodge with crimes of Reckless Manslaughter, Leaving the Scene of a Deadly Crash, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Possession of Narcotic Drugs. He remains in the Maricopa County Jail with a $750,000 cash bond.
