On Sunday tragedy once again struck the South African cycling community, just over one month after Idries Sheriff was killed by an alleged drunk driver in Cape Town.

Gauteng provincial police report a double fatality crash occurred near Walkerville, killing two cyclists while they were on a training ride.

According to police photos and spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, a white Volkswagen Polo automobile carrying five occupants allegedly crashed at a high rate of speed into both cyclists before overturning and coming to a stop.

“The two cyclists were declared dead on the scene while the occupants of the vehicle were taken to hospital with serious injuries,” Nevhuhulwi told SABC News.

Police identify the deceased as 49 year-old Jayesh Madhav and 52 year-old Atish Raman Jeevan, both active and highly respected riders within the local cycling community.

The crash occurred just prior to the South African National Road and Time Trial Championships (5-8 February) scheduled to use the same road where the crash occurred.

At press time while police continue their investigation no arrests have been made and there is no information on whether alcohol was involved.
