On Tuesday the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) announced 41 year-old American amateur cyclist Matthew Clark has been provisionally suspended after allegedly testing positive for unspecified Anabolic Androgenic Steroids.
The 2025 men’s 40-44 age category UCI Gran Fondo World Time Trial Champion and USA Cycling Masters Road Champion is accused of violating World Anti-Doping Agency code 2.1 Presence of a Prohibited Substance and 2.2 Use of a Prohibited Substance. The UCI reports the violations were committed on 16 October 2025, the same day he won the world championship time trial in Australia.
Prior to the UCI announcement, Clark was offered a position on the 2026 USA Kanberra p/b Five & 20 Cycling team, which provided Gran Fondo Daily with the following statement:
“In 2025, Matt Clark was a guest racer for our team at one event, 2 Days of Buffalo Stage Race, August 2-3. Matt did not represent our team at USAC Masters Nationals or at the UCI Fondo World Championships. We extended Matt an invitation to join our team for 2026. Today, January 13, 2026, Matt informed our team of his suspension. Our team supports the UCI’s decision and has a no tolerance doping policy for our racers. We wish Matt and his family all the best during this difficult time.”
If the UCI’s doping allegations are upheld by an anti-doping court Clark may be banned from the sport, stripped of the UCI world title and forced to return his world champion rainbow jersey.
Note: Provisionally suspended athletes are presumed innocent until they have an opportunity to present their case in court and a verdict is issued, but in the meantime they are prohibited from participating in sport in any capacity.
