Italian police have arrested an automobile driver who allegedly fired a gun at a semi-pro team of cyclists on a Sunday ride near the city of Peri on 21 December, according Il Sole 24 Ore.

Police report the suspect is a 25 year-old who slowed down, pulled out a gun and is accused of firing two shots at team S.C. Padovani cyclists as they were riding a double pace-line on a rural road. Although the cyclists were fearful and shocked, no one was injured.

The incident was quickly reported to local police who tracked down the vehicle and driver via license plate information, traffic surveillance video and knowledge that the vehicle had a broken left headlight (see photo).

While inspecting the vehicle police found and seized a gun that fires blanks and is believed to be the weapon used in the incident. They also suspect the driver was motivated by a strong dislike of cyclists.

The 25-year-old driver is now facing charges and prosecution by the Verona Public Prosecutor’s Office of aggravated assault, carrying weapons or offensive objects, and dangerous explosions.
