After finishing third last year, 16 year-old Alex Botha (Advanced Person Cycling Team) moved to the top of the podium at this year’s Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge in New Zealand on Saturday morning.
From a field of 3000 riders Botha narrowly outsprinted teammate Joshua Cavanagh to win the 160km Shimano Round the Lake gran fondo race in 3:57:15, averaging 40.4 km/h. Two seconds later Edward Rawson took third place.
It was another stellar result for the highly successful teenager. He won the prestigious Junior Tour of Southland in September and two gold medals on the track at the Australasia International Junior Cycling competition in May.
The fastest woman was Jaye Atkin, 32, who finished in 4:09:58, followed by Georgia Waghorn 4:23:19 and Sophie Archer 4:25:41.
Paul Greyson won the 100km medio fondo in 2:54:03, with Shenae Barker taking the women’s win in 3:18:35.
