The chairman of London Marathon Events, organiser of two of Great Britain’s largest mass participation sportives (RideLondon & Etape Loch Ness), has resigned after being convicted of careless driving and causing serious injury to a cyclist.

The conviction not only cost 69 year-old Terence Duddy his position at London Marathon Events, the board of BBC Children in Need, where he also held a seat, agreed “he could not continue” and accepted his resignation too.

A Thames Valley Police video camera captured the crash on 21 June 2025 in Buckinghamshire. The video (below) posted on Facebook shows a BMW driven by Duddy hitting a woman cyclist, somersaulting her over the hood and knocking her to the pavement, where she lay motionless.

A police statement on the incident reported, “The cyclist had right of way and a moment of carelessness from the driver, by not properly checking the road was clear to cross, has had a life changing impact on the cyclist.”

At a court hearing on 13 November Duddy pleaded guilty to “causing serious injury by careless or inconsiderate driving.” He then received an 8 month custodial sentence (suspended for 18 months), is required to complete 200 hours of volunteer work, must pay court costs of £272 and is not permitted to drive a vehicle for 18 months.

Since 2022 Duddy has helped London Marathon Events organise mass participation cycling sportives. Although this year’s RideLondon was cancelled and a 2026 date has not been announced, Etape Loch Ness will take place on 26 April 2026 in Inverness.
