The 33rd edition of the world’s largest team time trial event took place Saturday morning in Swellendam, South Africa with 3500 riders tackling the 202 kilometer Old Wealth Mutual Double Century.

To win teams must field a 12-person squad that rides not only swiftly, but also efficiently as a single cohesive unit for hour after hour after hour.

This year The Road Warriors super team, filled with current and former professionals, flew through the course at an average speed of 44.9 km/h (on standard road bikes) to win in 4:30:38, just 27 seconds shy of the course record. The 12 man squad consisted of Ryan Gibbons, Sascha Bertram, Lukas Baum, Gustav Basson, Willie Smit, Stefan Jaco De Bod, Callum Ormiston, Travis Stedman, Jose Kleinsmit, Jacobus Venter, Kent Warwick Main and Blaine Kieck.

“Everyone played massive roles today,” The Road Warriors team leader Ryan Gibbons told The Newspaper. “I was quite worried when we were shelling riders on Tradouw Pass, already, but all of those riders came back in the Team Support Zones and did ‘death pulls’ before dropping for good to launch us to victory.”

Last year’s champions RH 77 Factory finished in second place with a time of 4:33:34, followed by the 226ers at 4:57:02.

Chalk Air WC CMC powered to victory in the women’s race with a time of 6:04:06, including riders Ina Midgley, Jani Jordaan, Lelani Swart, Melissa Hinz, Angenita Potgieter, Storm Middleton, Erika Potgieter, Liesel Prentis, Jenna Borrill, Bronwyn Timm, Tandi Kitching and Nina van der Berg.

Falling only just over a minute short of the win and settling for second place was ASAP Ladies at 6:05:34, with the Nana Cycling Team claiming third in 6:10:47.
