The 42nd edition of El Tour de Tucson gran fondo in Arizona USA saw Landis Cyclery/Trek teammates Stephen Schaefer and Nikos Castro finish 1-2 with the fastest times from a field of 11,000 riders on Saturday morning.
Taking the victory with a thumbs-up salute was 34 year-old Stephen Schaefer (LANDIS CYCLERY/TREK) in the men’s 102 mile gran fondo race in 3:39:42, just ahead of 24 year-old teammate Nikos Castro. Jack Diemer, 19, finished third in 3:43:34.
After finishing second last year, 34 year-old Marjorie Rinaldo (FOUNT CYCLING GUILD) moved to the top of the women’s podium, taking the win in 3:53:02. Holly Breck, 33, was next at 3:53:54 followed by 21 year-old Emily Gilbert at 4:00:30.
Rod Stevens, 58, won the 63 mile medio fondo solo in 2:21:25, followed by 10x USA National Champion Rahsaan Bahati, 43, at 2:34:47 and 54 year-old former WorldTour racer Jens “Shut Up Legs” Voigt at 2:34:51. Kendra Patterson, 45, won for the women in 2:38:36.
