On Thursday a court in Antioquia, Colombia sentenced Edison Arley Posada (aka Cucaracho) to 33 years 4 months in prison after finding him guilty of murdering two-time UCI World Champion Marlon Perez in October 2024.
During the trial prosecutors presented physical and video evidence linking Posada to the stabbing and death of 48 year-old Perez after the two had been drinking at a bar in Carmen de Voiboral.
“He spent the whole afternoon sharing with him, ingesting liquor. He had a personal annoyance because of an expression of affection that Marlon had with a person who accompanied them and when they finish that personal activity, he assaulted him and caused the injury,” Colonel Carlos Martínez commander of the Police in Antioquia told Semana.
Perez won his first UCI world championship on the track in 1994 as a junior before turning professional and eventually participating in two Giro d’Italia. He also won three national time trial titles and represented Colombia in three Olymic Games: Atlanta 1996, Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004.
After retiring in 2012 Perez partnered with para-cyclist Nelson Serna to win his second world title in 2017 at the UCI Para Cycling Road World Championships.
