The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) along with the International Testing Agency (ITA) announced on Tuesday 18 year-old Artyom Proskuryako of Azerbaijan allegedly tested positive for the banned drug Methamphetamine, commonly known as meth, on 23 September at the 2025 UCI Road World Championships in Rwanda and has been provisionally suspended.

The anti-doping test was conducted based on “intelligence-led testing”, according to the UCI.

At the world championships held in September Proskuryako competed in the Junior Men’s Time Trial and Road Race, finishing 41st and with a DNF (Did Not Finish) respectively. Two weeks later he earned similar results at the 2025 UEC Road European Championships, 49th in the time trial and another road race DNF.

Methamphetamine is a highly addictive central nervous system stimulant banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency. Short-term effects of the drug include feelings of euphoria and increased physical strength. It also carries potential serious negative health effects, including paranoia, anxiety, rapid heart rate, increased body temperature, seizures, stroke, or even death. Long-term use may lead to insomnia, memory loss and development of a substance use disorder.

Note: Provisionally suspended athletes are presumed innocent until an anti-doping court hears their case and renders a verdict, but in the meantime they are not allowed to participate in sport in any capacity.
