Celebrated Australian Paralympic cyclist Paige Greco, 28, died suddenly Saturday at her home in Adelaide following a medical episode, according to AusCycling.
In 2020 she shot to fame at the Tokyo Paralympic Games, shattering the Women’s C1-3 Individual Pursuit world record and winning over the hearts and minds of Australians on her way to earning the gold medal. She also won bronze medals in the Road Race and Time Trial.
Greco was born with Cerebral Palsy, a group of conditions that affect movement and posture, but that did not stop her from training and competing. Besides her Paralympic medals, Greco also won multiple UCI Para-cycling World Championships titles and medals, including a bronze two months ago in France in the Road Race.
“We are heartbroken by the tragic news of Paige’s death,” AusCycling CEO Marne Fechner said in a statement. “Paige was an extraordinary athlete who achieved outstanding accomplishments at the highest levels of our sport. Much more than that, she touched the lives of everyone around her with her positive spirit and courageous outlook.”
