Jason Osborne of Germany and New Zealand’s Mary Kate McCarthy won second consecutive UCI Cycling Esports World Championship titles live at the Space42 Arena in Abu Dhabi, UAE on Saturday.
Competing in a three race omnium on the MyWhoosh virtual racing platform against the world’s best esports cyclists, the 31 year-old Osborne (a former world-class rower) scored 564 points to win back-to-back men’s world titles and rainbow jerseys.
Michal Kaminski of Poland finished second with 493 points to take men’s silver, while the Belgian Lennert Teugels claimed a bronze medal with 468 points. Njal Pedersen of Norway was fourth, while Denmark’s Bjorn Andreassen was fifth.
Mary Kate McCarthy, 30, also won her second world esports title with a commanding performance. She scored 597 points to win the women’s omnium by 72 points ahead of Gabriella Guerra of Brazil and 119 points in front Italian Francesca Tommasi. Merle Brunnee of Germany and American Kristen Kulchinski finished fourth and fifth respectively.
