The Greek seaside resort town of Loutraki, located on the Gulf of Corinth near Athens, hosted its first UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying race on Sunday morning, with over 400 riders from 25 countries competing on the 113 kilometer Gran Fondo Loutraki route.
Powering to victory with a dominant solo performance was 2024 World Deaf Cycling Champion Chionis Panagiotis of Greece. The 33 year-old finished in 2:48:48, two minutes ahead of Exarchopoulos Sotiris 2:50:29, Betrand Lecoq 2:51:00 and Papageorgiou Alexandros 2:51:02.
34 year-old Fasoi Varvara, also from Greece, left no doubt she was the strongest rider in the women’s competition. The 9x Greek National Champion earned the win in 2:53:42. Stroubouli Danae 3:06:31 and Chatziioannidou Foteini 3:07:03 placed second and third.
Riders finishing in the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category automatically qualified for the August 2026 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships taking place in Niseko, Japan.
