The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office in Georgia USA reports amateur road cyclist and father of four Carlos Moreno died in a head-on crash with an alleged drunk driver on 19 October.
The 51 year-old cyclist had gone out for a solo late afternoon ride on one of his favorite routes, when 42 year-old Lane Keyes allegedly drove his Rivian pickup truck across the center line at high speed and directly into Moreno, killing him instantly.
Witnesses report: After hitting Moreno the pickup crashed through a fence and flipped multiple times before coming to a stop. The driver then exited the vehicle and tried to flee.
Deputies caught and arrested Keyes in connection with the crash, booking him into the Cherokee County Jail under charges of: 1) DUI – MULTIPLE SUBSTANCES, 2) RECKLESS DRIVING, 3) DRIVING TOO FAST FOR CONDITIONS, 4) TAMPERING WITH EVIDENCE – FELONY, 5) VEHICULAR HOMICIDE, 5) OPEN CONTAINER ALCOHOL IN VEHICLE, 6) WEAVING OVER ROADWAY.
Nicknamed “El Toro” due to his strong climbing ability, Moreno was well respected within the local cycling scene and active with many cycling groups, including Webb Bridge Cycling, Cycling Alpharetta and the Northern Georgia Cycling Association.
As a single father of four Moreno leaves behind three daughters (25, 22 and 18), as well as a 16 year-old son. A GoFundMe has been set up to raise at least $100,000 USD to help support Moreno’s children in the difficult days ahead.
Fighting to holding back tears, his oldest daughter Andrea told WXIA Channel 11 News, “He was truly, in every sense of the word, an angel on this earth, and we are so lucky to have him as our father. He loved us so much, and we knew how much he loved us. He worked so hard for me and my siblings every single day.”
