UPDATE: The cyclist killed was identified by coroner’s officials as 45 year-old bike racer and church pastor Eric John Williams of Garden Grove, California. He leaves behind his wife and four young children, with a GoFundMe set up to help them move forward in the difficult days ahead.

Sad news from Southern California as Huntington Beach Police (HBDP) report just after 06:45 on Monday three male cyclists out for an early morning training ride were hit from behind by an alleged DUI driver, with one rider pronounced dead at the crash scene and the others transported to hospital with serious injuries.

The Orange County coroner’s office has yet to release the name of the man killed, pending notification of his family. The names and conditions of the other two cyclists have also not been released.

Multiple Los Angeles area news outlets report:

A gold colored 2006 Mercedes E-Class sedan drove into the three cyclists while they were riding in the southbound bike lane on the Pacific Coast Highway.

After hitting the cyclists, described as members of a Long Beach bike club, and leaving their bodies strewn across the road, the Mercedes driver fled the deadly scene, continuing down the highway until eventually stopping about 1 kilometer later.

Responding police officers pursued the Mercedes and at 07:43 arrested the female driver, identified as 43 year-old Amber Kristine Calderon.

She was arrested on suspicion of: 1) SIMPLE POSSESSION OF HARD DRUG W/2 PRIOR CONVICTIONS, 2) DUI ANY DRUG: CAUSE BODILY INJURY, 3) GROSS VEHICULAR MANSLAUGHTER WHILE INTOXICATED, 4) HIT AND RUN RESULTING IN DEATH OR INJURY

HBPD spokesman Corbin Carson indicated the department’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team is handling the investigation.
