On a ‘hazardous weather’ shortened course, 50 miles in lieu of 100, Sofia Gomez Villafane (SPECIALIZED OFF-ROAD) and multiple Cape Epic MTB champion Matt Beers (SPECIALIZED OFF-ROAD) won the USA season ending Big Sugar Gravel race in Arkansas on Saturday morning, with each claiming a lion’s hare of a $30,000 USD prize purse.

Racing in wet and miserable conditions as dangerous hailstorms, lightning and tornados threatened, the 31 year-old Argentinian Sofia Gomez Villafane held off a chasing pack to win the women’s race in 2:36:23, followed quickly by USA gravel champion Lauren Stephens 2:36:29 and then Stella Hobbs 2:36:35.

South African Matt Beers, also 31, soloed to a wet, wild and muddy victory with an almost 4 minute lead to claim the top podium step in blistering fast 2:12:55. Griffen Easter 2:16:36 and Riley Amos 2:16:38 earned the remaining men’s podium steps.

After seven months and six events, 25 year-old Cameron Jones (SCOTT-SHIMANO) of New Zealand finished fifth to win the overall men’s Life Time Grand Prix series title. Sofia Gomez Villafane won the women’s overall title.

Just over 1700 riders from across the United States and many world destinations finished the weather challenged gravel ‘n mud race.
