Latest anti-doping news from around the world:

NADO Italia announced the provisional suspension of Marco Provera, charging the amateur cyclist with two anti-doping violations after he allegedly tested positive for the banned substance Clostebol in a control ordered by NADO Italia.

It is not Provera’s first anti-doping incident. In 2021 he also tested positive for Clostebol after finishing fourth at Granfondo La Fausto Coppi and was subsequently banned by NADO Italia for one year.

Recently, the 32 year-old won the Mediofondo La Fausto Coppi on 28 June, finished fifth at Granfondo Alpi del Mare on 21 September and then fourth a week later at Granfondo Internationale Alassio on 27 September.

Clostebol is an anabolic androgenic steroid (AAS) similar to Testosterone that is banned at all times by the World Anti-Doping Agency. In Italy it can easily be bought as a cream or spray in pharmacies under the brand name Trofodermin to treat skin abrasions, lesions and burns. By law its packaging carries a prominent “DOPING” label to warn users that it contains a banned substance.

Note: Provisionally suspended athletes are presumed innocent until an anti-doping court hears their case and renders a verdict, but in the meantime they are not allowed to participate in sport in any capacity.
