The USA based Belgian Waffle Ride (BWR) gravel series rolled into the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina on Saturday 4 October at BWR Asheville.
Although gravel pros Adam Roberge (FELT UN1TD) and Emily Newsome (PAS RACING) took the overall Belgian Waffle Ride men’s and women’s titles, the big story of the day was 70 year-old cycling legend Ned Overend (SPECIALIZED) winning the shorter 56 mile Belgian Wafer Ride.
Not only did the first ever MTB World Champion (1990) win, the septuagenarian destroyed a field of graveleurs more than half his age, finishing solo in 2:49:14. Up-and-coming 17 year-olds Eden Baier-miles 2:57:44 and Asher Krider 2:59:44 finished a humble second and third place.
29 year-old professional Canadian National Disc Golf Champion Sofia Donnecke (PHYSICAL CULTURE) won the women’s wafer in 3:06:30, followed by Alice Perryman 3:06:43 and Megumi Jones 3:28:50.
The 100 mile men’s BWR saw 28 year-old Canadian Adam Roberge win his second BWR Asheville solo in 4:46:26, followed by Cole Davis 4:48:34 and Andrew Dillman 4:52:11.
43 year-old Emily Newsom handily won the women’s BWR race in 5:25:23, thirteen minutes ahead of Florence Howden at 5:48:37. Katherine Lin 6:19:42 stepped onto the final podium step with a time of 6:19:42.
