Cycling team directors have enough challenges just trying to earn victories and find sponsors, let alone dealing with a team member videoed riding recklessly like an idiot while wear the team kit on a training ride.
That’s what the staff at the Equipo Kern Pharma team in Spain unexpectedly woke up to on Instagram Wednesday morning.
Just outside Barcelona on the dangerous Rabassada road descent, 27 year-old team rider Francisco “Kiko” Galvan is recorded on video repeatedly illegally bunny hopping over the raised median divider and between pylons installed to prevent cars (and bikes) from enter the oncoming lane.
The team was quick to issue an X/Twitter statement – and sanction their own rider:
“Equipo Kern Pharma expresses its indignation at the images broadcast of one of our cyclists in serious breach of road safety regulations… we deeply regret and apologize for an incident that does not reflect the values we stand for and want to project as a team.”
“Equipo Kern Pharma reiterates its highest and firm commitment to safety on the road, both in and out of competition. Respect for road safety and traffic regulations are fundamental principles in this sport, which we promote both in our competitive activity and in our daily training work with cyclists.”
“For this reason, Equipo Kern Pharma is taking disciplinary measures with the cyclist involved to ensure that attitudes and situations such as those that occurred are not repeated in the future. We assume our responsibility and will continue to work to reinforce the training and awareness of all our members in road safety.”
Although the team did not specify what specific “disciplinary” actions it was taking, it is a pretty much a sure thing Galvan is on their “idiot shit list” for the foreseeable future.
