UPDATE Friday 24 October 2025: Cyclist Kevin Bonaldo’s family and team announced today that the 25 year-old did not recover from his injuries and died at hospital San Bortolo in Vicenza, Italy.
Italian media reports on Sunday Italian Kevin Bonaldo (S.C. PADOVANI POLO CHERRY BANK) suffered a serious cardiac event in the final kilometers of the 58th Piccola Sanremo race outside Vicenza, Italy and is now in a coma.
The 25-year-old collapsed and crashed reportedly due to cardiac arrest during the final run to the finish of the 151 kilometer race. Race doctor Giuseppe Andaloro was immediately on-scene to perform resuscitation and stabilize Bonaldo. A medical evaculation helicopter then transferred the rider to San Bortolo Hospital in Vicenza, where he remains in the intensive care unit in a medically induced coma.
“It’s news that left us all breathless and we are still anxious to have news soon from the Vicenza Hospital,” said race organizer Gianluca Peripoli, President of Unione Ciclistica Sovizzo. “I want to express my personal prayers and that of the entire Uc Sovizzo to the boy and his family and, at the same time, I want to thank the health workers who rescued the athlete in a timely manner. The presence of Dr. Andaloro was fortunate in the face of such a serious and unexpected illness.”
Team SC Padovani Polo Cherry Bank also issued a statement, “Kevin, now we are all by your side for the most important race. As soon as there is further news about it, the team will communicate it. At the moment we are hugging Kevin and his family.”
