Latest anti-doping news from around the world:
South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport (SAIDS) issued a cautionary warning to athletes that World Anti-Doping Agency lab testing revealed VENOM HD Extreme Intensity Pre-Workout dietary supplement (batch numbers: VPFP-270125-3; VPPP-270125-01 and VPBB-270125-3), contained the banned substance 5- methylhexan-2-amine. This substance was not listed on the product’s label, is prohibited In-Competition as a Specified Stimulant and is likely to return a positive anti-doping test result from an athlete’s urine sample. SAIDS offered the following advice when considering nutritional supplements: The ongoing issue of mislabeling and contamination of dietary supplements present significant risks to athletes. Remain vigilant and aware of the risks involved in using dietary supplements, and to exercise utmost caution when considering products that do not provide full ingredient transparency or that claim to produce “incredible results”
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) upheld a 4 year Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) Anti-Doping Tribunal sanction imposed on Russian cyclist Iryna Popova for the use of a prohibited substance or method, following unexplained Athlete Biological Passport abnormalities in 2016 and 2022, according to an International Testing Agency (ITA) announcement. The 34 year-old former European MTB champion is prohibited from participating in sport in any capacity until 19 September 2028.
The UCI also banned Polish Paralympic cyclist Otylia Marczuk 4 years after she tested positive Out-of-Competition for the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited substances Stanozolol and Erythropoietin (EPO) just prior to the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games. The 34 year-old is prohibited from participating in sport in any capacity until 27 August 2028.
30 year-old Italian rider Giovanni Carboni has been provisionally suspended by the UCI due to “unexplained abnormalities in his Athlete Biological Passport in 2024,” when he was a member of JCL Team Ukyo in Japan. His current team, Unibet Tietema Rockets of France, was “shocked” by the UCI announcement and immediately suspended Carboni. “Today, we have been informed by the UCI that they assert that in a period prior to joining our team, rider Giovanni Carboni possibly committed an anti-doping rule violation. We have therefore decided to suspend him with immediate effect,” the team said on Facebook.
Note: Provisionally suspended athletes are presumed innocent until an anti-doping court renders a verdict, but in the meantime they are not allowed to participate in sport in any capacity.
