The 43rd edition of the epic 207 mile LOTOJA road race (Logan, Utah to Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Wyoming) rolled out at o-dark-thirty Saturday morning 6 September with 1300 competitors from across America, Canada, Mexico, Costa Rica and even the Czech Republic.
After a painstakingly long day in the saddle, ascending three mountain passes with a total 10,000ft of elevation gain and pedaling through three states (Utah, Idaho and Wyoming) former triathlete Bailey Hinz (GO-FAST FCC) set a new women’s course record of 9:20:45 to win. In her first LOTOJA the 39 year-old beat the record by an impressive 15 minutes and finished 12 minutes ahead an elite chase group of LOTOJA veterans. In a photo finish Ashley Maginot took second place by a tire width after edging out Katie Bonebrake, both credited with a time of 9:32:45.
Hinz told DeseretNews afterwards, “When I got to the beginning of the KOM near Salt River, we were all in a small group and I just decided to go. I was feeling really good and I started to do the calculations and realized that I might have a chance at the course record.”
After over 8 hours of racing the men’s competition came down a tight finish, with the top 4 separated by just 80 seconds. 34 year-old Justin Spangler (MI DUOLE CYCLING) powered across the finish stripe to win in 8:29:37. Daniel Cherkis and Jesse Hogin (who was impressively off the front solo until mile 170) completed the podium in that order. Dylan Fluckiger finished fourth.
