The 25th RiderMan weekend long stage race for amateurs in the heart of Germany’s Black Forest ended in a massive crash on Sunday 7 September, with authorities reporting 60-70 riders injured.
From a field 1079 participants, the mass casualty incident occurred towards the end of Sunday’s third and final stage, a 90 kilometer road race finishing in Bad Durrheim. The incident triggered a massive emergency response, including 50 rescue vehicles and four medical evacuation helicopters.
Organizers and local authorities report 20 riders were seriously hurt and transported to hospital, with 18 others sustaining minor injuries requiring medical attention. Police indicate about 30 more were slightly injured with scrapes, bruises and road rash.
“Falls and thus a certain risk unfortunately belong to cycling. We are glad that according to previous findings at least there are no seriously injured and wish all injured a quick and especially complete recovery,” race manager Rik Sauser said in a press release.
The race was subsequently cancelled with the day’s stage results based on time up the last King of the Mountains segment in the town of Pfohren. 31 year-old German Dennis Biederer (TEAM STRASSACKER) won the overall general classification with a time of 4:52:11 for the men, with 53 year-old former Swiss pro Jutta Stienen (TEAM ALPECIN) taking the women’s title in 5:26:11.
