Whistler resident Tyler Eardley acheived home townhero status on Saturday 6 August by winning the 16th edition of Canada’s famous Sea to Sky Whistler Gran Fondo in British Columbia.
From a field of 2000 participants racing on a smokey 122 kilometer point-to-point route from Vancouver to the mountain top ski resort of Whistler, Eardley crossed under the finish banner to the cheers of his neighbors (and many more) in 3:22:20. Mark Dawes 3:22:30 finished in second place, with Graydon Staples completing the podium in 3:22:42.
Russell Carolyn was the fastest woman, earning the Whistler Champion title in 3:34:09, followed by Frances McSoley 3:47:10 and Victoria Leader 3:47:16.
The 152 kilometer forte fondo saw former pro roadie turned gravel racer Rob Britton climb to victory in 4:08:02, with Brent Thumlert 4:24:25 and Taylor Little 4:40:25 next. Menglei Li was the fastest for the women in 4:52:14. Melanie Katcher 4:56:06 and Liesl Hood 5:28:50 claimed second and third place.
Danny Lowndes 1:34:58 and Evelyn Bruce 1:53:29 won the shorter 55 kilometer medio fondo for the men and women respectively.
