The 4th L’Etape Romania was held in Bucharest Sunday morning with over 2000 cyclist participating in the 20th event of the worldwide amateur series organized by Tour de France.
Just days after competing at the UCI Junior Track World Championships 17 year-old Paris George Matei of Romania powered to his first L’Etape victory in 2:00:12, averaging 42.48 km/h. 47 year-old former Romanian Road and Time Trial National Champion Alex Ciocan was just behind to earn second place in 2:00:18, followed by Moldovian Andrei Covalciuc, 30, at 2:00:32.
21 year-old Romanian Catalina Andreea Catineanu won the women’s title in 2:09:21 after defeating Romanian Junior National Criterium Champion Bianca Cristiona Patrascu, 16, in a mad dash to the finishing stripe. Pro triathlete Antoanela Felicia Manac, 30, completed the podium just a few seconds later in 2:09:26.
The shorter 42 kilometer race saw Ghennadi Morgun finish in just under one hour (58:50) to win with an average speed of 42.84 km/h. Vladimir Carlan, also a Junior National Criterium Champion, won the sprint for second place from a large chasing pack in 58:57 with Matei Cucu right behind taking third.
From the same chasing pack 15 year-old Mara Peroiu-Taratu won for the women in 59:12, followed closely by Junior Cyclocross National Champion Brigitte Belu and Bogomila Katsarska.
