Latest anti-doping news from around the world:
NADO Italia announced the provisional suspension of amateur cyclist Lido Fogli, charging him with anti-doping violations after tests allegedly revealed his biological specimens contained seven drugs prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency – Testosterone, Boldenone, Drostanolone, Trenbolone, Clomiphene, Clostebol and Ephedrine. Results list a Lido Fogli winning the 60-64 years old M7 Italian National Master Road Championship CSI on 29 June 2025. Testosterone, Boldenone, Drostanolone, Trenbolone and Clostebol are anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) banned at all times, but still used by some athletes to increase muscle mass, strength and endurance. Clomiphene can increase and restore natural Testosterone production following AAS use. Ephedrine is a central nervous stimulant.
NADO Italia also provisionally suspended amateur cyclist Matteo Gaido, charging him with Evading, Refusing or Failing to Submit to Sample Collection when requested – a World Anti-Doping Agency Code 2.3 violation. Results list a Matteo Gaido, 30, finishing 3rd overall at Giro della Provincia Granda on 3 August and 2nd overall at the legendary Granfondo Sestriere Colle delle Finestre on 6 July. Note: Granfondo Sestriere regulations specify competitors returning a positive anti-doping test result within six months after the event may be fined €50,000. It is unclear if that would apply in this situation since a 2.3 violation is not based on a positive test result.
Note: Provisionally suspended athletes are presumed innocent until an anti-doping court renders a verdict, but in the meantime they are not allowed to participate in sport in any capacity.
Also, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) banned Zimbabwe BMX cyclist Tawanda Marova, 36, for three months after he tested positive for Carboxy-THC on 20 April 2025 at the African Continental BMX Championships, where he placed third. Carboxy-THC is a byproduct of the body breaking down the psychoactive compound THC in cannabis. Anti-doping tests can detect it several months after cannabis use. Marova is prohibited from participating in sport in any capacity until 5 September 2025.
