With just four events remaining 2025 UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying resumed in Costa Rica after being postponed in June due to severe weather.
In beautiful riding conditions 22 year-old Sebastian Calderon Casalvolone (7C ECONOMY HYUNDAI) soloed to victory on the 141km UCI Gran Fondo Costa Rica course in a blazing fast 3:08:27, while also earning a front row ticket to race at the upcoming world championships. Marcos Sanchez Fallas led the chasing pack across the finish line one minute later, with Pablo Luis Mudarra Segura taking third place and the final podium step.
29 year-old American Stephanie Clark also claimed a world championship starting spot by winning the women’s gran fondo in 3:22:30. Melisa Avila and Maricruz Camacho Suarez finished in 3:26:28 to earn second and third place respectively. Andrea Casalvolone (Sebastian Calderon’s mother) finished fifth and won the women’s 45-49 category.
Gustavo Mesen Vargas won the 70km medio fondo in 1:39:08, just ahead of Gustavo Solis at 1:39:40 and Luis Cartin at 1:39:54. Ariana Mel won for the women in 1:51:38, followed by Anabell Calder at 1:56:16 and Ana Yancy Fallas Monge at 1:56:45.
Competitors finishing within the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category automatically qualified for the 2025 UCI Grand Fondo World Championships taking place in the Australia in October.
