Spanish media reports a massive crash during the second stage of the 9th edition of the Vuelta Junior a la Ribera del Duero stage race on Saturday took the life of 17 year-old Ivan Melendez (TENERIFE CABBERTY U19).
The crash occurred halfway through the 117 kilometer long stage and involved 18 of 155 junior racers, with Melendez the most critically injured. He was immediately treated on-scene by paramedics and then transferred by ambulance to hospital, but unfortunately died en-route.
UCI President Davide Lappartient posted on X-Twitter, “I am deeply saddened by the passing of Iván Meléndez Luque, who tragically lost his life today during the @VueltaRibera in Spain. My thoughts are with his loved ones and with all who are mourning his loss within the cycling community.”
In a public statement the organizers said, “We extend our deepest condolences to his family, teammates and friends.” They also cancelled the remainder of Saturday’s stage, with competitors then riding in a solemn procession to the next town where team staff were waiting. A memorial service for Melendez is planned on Sunday in lieu of riding the final stage.
