Recently retired WordTour pro and 4x Tour de France stage winner Roman Bardet (TEAM PICNIC-POSTNL) earned his first gravel win on Saturday at the UCI Gravel World Championship qualifier in Fubine Monferrato, Italy.
The 34 year-old Frenchman soloed to victory in 3:25:47 on the 120 kilometer long Monsterrando route in rolling hills of the Piemonte wine region, followed by Petr Vakoc of the Czech Republic at 3:26:15 and the Dutchman Loman Mathijs at 3:26:49.
32 year-old Italian Erica Magnaldi (UAE TEAM ADQ) won the women’s race in 3:55:56, with Australian Nicole Frain and the Swiss Irina Lutzelschwab completing the podium in 3:58:41 and 3:59:36 respectively.
TEAM DEL CAPITANO of Italy swept the shorter 80 kilometer medio fondo for old age groups (W50+, M60+), with Daniele Bertozzi winning for the men in 2:47:38 and Cristina Prato Maria doing the same for the women in 3:09:25.
Competitors finishing within the top 25% of their UCI age/gender category automatically qualified for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships taking place in the Netherlands in October.
