Six hours after the Leadville Trail 100 race in Colorado finished on Saturday organizer Life Time made a shocking announcement, reigning USA Gravel National Champion Lauren Stephens had been disqualified from the race, stripped of her 3rd place finish and removed from the results.

“Following an official review after the conclusion of the Life Time Leadville Trail 100 MTB presented by Kenetik, Lauren Stephens has been disqualified on account of her taking aid outside of a designated crew location. As a result, every rider who initially finished in fourth place onwards has been moved up one place in the final standings,” Life Time announced in a press release.

After the race via live stream the 38 year-old former road national champion, who just switched to gravel this year, said, “I just try to be the best version of myself, I don’t race for results.”

Telling Cyclingnews later, “I misunderstood the rules. I would never break a rule intentionally.”

Kate Courtney won the women’s race while setting a new course record in 6:48:54. Melissa Rollins was next and Cecily Decker moved up into third place after Stephens’ disqualification.

Keegan Swenson won the men’s Leadville Trial 100 title for 5th time in a row. John Gaston finished second with Simon Pellaud in third place.
