At the 74th edition of Tour of Guadalupe two young Dutch racers were caught on video trying to sneak back into the race after being dropped from the peloton on Sunday 3 August.
GRC Jan van Arckle teammates Niels Tenniglo, 21, and Huub van Kapel, 19, were dropped from the main peloton during Stage 2 of the 137km race and were facing elimination if they did not make it to the finish in Trois-Rivieres within the time limit.
So the pair of wannabe pros improvised, hiding behind two parked cars while the front of the race completed several finishing circuits. When the peloton passed, the pair sneakily jumped back into the race from their hideout.
But spectators captured their nefarious actions on video, showing the damning evidence to race officials who immediately disqualified the youths.
“I had two videos to support this big charade, because that’s what it is. It’s very serious!” Frédéric Théobald, the president of the Guadeloupe Islands Regional Cycling Committee, told local website La Première afterward.
Team GRC Jan van Arckle issued a statement after the incident:
“As many of you have probably already noticed, two riders from our team broke the rules during the race in Guadeloupe. As a cycling association, we do not condone this behaviour. We will engage in dialogue with these riders and, based on this, appropriate action will be taken. On behalf of the entire team, we sincerely apologise to the organisation and the jury for this incident.”
