On Sunday morning tragedy struck three members of the Avis di Andria cycling club when they were killed in a car crash while participating in a training ride near Bari, Italy on the Adriatic coast.
Local media reports about 08:30, for an unknown reason, a car slid out of control and crashed into a group of five cyclists while they were riding single file on the road shoulder. Three riders were hit directly by the car, with two dying at the scene and one succumbing to injuries at hospital.
Killed were 55 year-old Vincenzo Mantovani, 70 year-old Antonio Porro and 30 year-old Sandro Abruzzese, all members of Ciclo Avis di Andia.
Porro was a grandfather and well-known entrepreneur in the area, while Abruzzese worked in insurance and Vincenzo Mantovani was a husband and father with two children.
Police are investigating the incident as possible road murder, with the 30-year-old man who was driving the car and allegedly ran over the cyclists the main suspect. The man, who stopped after the crash and called emergency services, was also injured, but not seriously.
The two cyclists who escaped injury and were witness to the crash estimate the car was traveling at 150 km/h, on a road with a speed limit of 90.
