Police in Tyler, Texas USA have arrested 22 year-old Jake Acker after he allegedly hit a teen cyclist participating in a club training ride and failed to stop to render aid.
The incident occurred Tuesday evening July 29 about 18:30 during the weekly Rose City Cycling Club “Pain Train” ride and was captured on video (link below).
The video shows a peloton preparing to make a turn off of a two lane country road as a dark colored car passes. Just after a cyclist signals to make a left turn, the car looks to accelerate to try and pass the peloton, but drives straight into one of the cyclists, knocking him violently to the ground.
The driver then speeds off with other cyclists calling emergency medics and reporting the vehicle’s description and license plate to police.
The driver, Jake Acker, was apprehended about 20 minutes later, with Acker admitting to police he did not stop after hitting the cyclist due to him “being scared,” according to the arrest affidavit.
Hit was 14 year-old Jackson Macintosh, who was examined by emergency medics at the crash scene and luckily only received lacerations on both knees and a fractured right wrist, according to statements from the club.
Acker was charged with Failure to Stop/Render Aid at a Collision Involving Injury and released on a $5000 bond the next day. He was also cited for Failing to Control Speed.
