34 year-old former neo-pro cyclist James McLaughlin of Great Britain struggles with daily activities after a “car-dooring” crash left him with debilitating injuries, crushing his dreams of riding in the Tour de France.
In 2020 while McLaughlin was working as a London bicycle courier a car passenger open her door right into the path of the cyclist, causing him to crash and fracture an elbow and shoulder.
Now the former neo-pro racer is seeking over £1 million in damages from the insurance carriers of the driver and passenger, claiming he has mild traumatic brain injury and suffers from memory loss, depression, fatigue and anxiety.
His attorney, Winston Hunter KC stated in court this week that prior to the crash McLaughlin had “a number of recent successes,” including an impressive sixth-place finish at the 2018 Commonwealth Games time trial, whilst pursuing his goal of riding for a WorldTour team in the Tour de France.
Adding, now McLaughlin “has lost that cycling career.”
Due to the complexities of proving traumatic brain injury, McLaughlin’s trial, originally scheduled for later this year, is likely to be quite lengthy due to expert medical witness testimony and required neurological exams.
