The 39th edition of Amashova National Classic pro-am road race in South Africa is one of oldest and most popular cycling events in the country, drawing about 4000 participants each year to battle for a €12,000 (R250,000) prize purse.
After breaking his wrist just four weeks ago, it was mountain biker Daniel Van Der Watt, 22, who rode everyone off his wheel to win the 132km race solo in 3:24:00. Esports racer Pieter Avenant, 47, showed he can also win in-real-life, taking the sprint for second place in 3:37:31. Reuben Stephan Van Der Merwe was third one second later.
World caliber esports racer Jill Pruett, 39, dominated the women’s field to win and finished a very strong fourth overall in 3:37:33. Jana Van Der Merwe was the second woman at 3:52:26, followed by Heather Eb.
The shorter, but more intense, 106km race was won by 36 year-old pro Reinardt Janse Van Rensburg (TSHENOLO PRO CYCLING TEAM) in a two-up sprint over Travis Steadman. The pair finished in 2:16:55 with a blistering average speed of 46.5 km/h. Emile Van Niekerk led the chasing field across the line for third at 2:18:10.
The women’s 106km race was decided in a tight five-up sprint, with 31 year-old pro and South African National Road champion S’annara Grove (CJ O’SHEA) besting her breakaway companions to win in 2:48:49. Lisa Bone and Lucy Young were second and third in that order with the same time.
