With over 16,000 participants the 33rd L’Etape du Tour gran fondo in France started from Albertville Sunday Morning, with French amateur Victor Videl (CC ETUPES) taking overall victory and pulling on the coveted maillot jaune in La Plagne.
Racing over the same 131km Alpine route the Tour de France pros will ride next Friday, with five categorized climbs, the 26 year-old soloed across the finish line in 4:25:49 to win the one-day amateur version of Le Tour.
Fresh off of winning the French Bourgogne-Franche-Comte Road Championship in June and finishing fourth overall at the Tour de Cote d’Or stage race last week, Vidal was thrilled to add a L’Etape du Tour victory to his palmares.
“I’m really too happy! I came for that, to win. And between saying and doing it there is a world. In addition, it is the most beautiful cyclo in the world in my opinion so yes I am happy, “ a smiling Vidal said from atop the podium.
Earning second place was Canadian Jack Burke who came up 8 seconds short of winning with time of 4:25:57. Frenchman Arthur Blanc took third place and the final podium step in 4:26:43.
Provisional results for the women show 21 year-old Melanie Piaser of France solidly claiming the L’Etape du Tour Champion title and maillot jaune in 5:07:58, with the German Stephanie Meder next at 5:12:51, followed by Aurore Pauchet in 5:17:02 also from France.
