Organizers of the 100 mile KowTown Gravel race in Kremmling, Colorado USA announced one their competitors died during the event after a high speed truck/bicycle collision on Saturday 5 July.

“Yesterday, on the Bull course, we had a traffic accident between a cyclist and a vehicle which resulted in a fatality. First and foremost, our deepest condolences are extended to the rider’s family, and the entire cycling community,” KowTown organizers posted on their website.

Grand County Coroners identified the cyclist as 62 year-old Thomas Gerard Cosgrove of Boulder, Colorado.

Responding officer Doug Crocker of the Kremmling Police Department told Sky-Hi News, “The bicycle was in multiple pieces. At 65 mph with a 3,000-pound vehicle and a bicycle, it’s not a good outcome for the bicyclist … He came here psyched to ride and now he won’t come home.”

Colorado State Police report the incident occurred when “The bicycle disregarded a stop sign at the intersection and began turning left onto Highway 40 as the Tundra [truck] approached. The bicycle struck the rear passenger door of the Tundra.”

The truck driver remained at the scene, cooperating with police investigators. No charges have been filed at this time.
