Danish Anti Doping (DIF) has banned cyclist Christian Kornum for two years following positive test results for the prohibited stimulant Methylphenidate commonly found in the prescription medication Ritalin.
The 21 year-old tested positive after finishing second at the Danish National Championship U23 Road Race in May 2024, where he impressively powered the winning breakaway for over 150 kilometers.
During the anti-doping proceedings Kornum stated classmates offered him the ‘study drug’ Ritalin the day before the championship race, which he accepted and ingested. Two classmates corroborated Kornum’s version of events.
Kornum also claimed that even though he has raced for 5 years he never received anti-doping education or new about the World Ant-Doping Agency Prohibited Substance online reference tool – which includes Ritalin/Methylphenidate.
DIF reasoned that the doping incident was “unintentional,” though they still issued a 2 year ban since it is an athlete’s own responsibility to ensure that no prohibited substance enter their body.
Kornum is banned from participating in sport in any capacity until 4 July 2026 and has been stripped of his national championship silver medal.
