Extreme weather impacted a second UCI Gran Fondo World Championship qualifying race this past weekend, with CRC 506 Gran Fondo Costa Rica cancelled until further notice due to Tropical Wave No. 4 hitting the country.

As an organization, our priority will always be the safety and well-being of all participants, volunteers, and staff involved. Given the various situations that have already occurred throughout the course area and the multiple reports received from various authorities, including the green alert issued practically throughout the country, it is essential to follow the recommendations of emergency services. Postponing the event has not been an easy decision, but we believe it is the right one, following the recommendations of the authorities to ensure the safety of every person who takes part in the CRC 506 UCI Gran Fondo,” organizers posted on the event website.

An alert issued by the Costa Rican National Commission for Risk Prevention and Emergency Response called for all outdoor public activities scheduled on Sunday 1 June to be postponed. Intense and persistent rain coupled with 80 km/h wind swept across the region, increasing the risk of landslides, flash flooding, downed trees and power lines.

The cancellation follows the 3RIDES worlds qualifying race also being called off on Sunday due to dangerous weather in Germany.

Both organizers hope to reschedule the races in time for riders to qualify for the 2025 UCI Gran Fondo World Championships taking place in Australia next October.
