News outlets in Colombia report that former professional cyclist Jonathan Paredes, 36, was killed in a horrifying crash while on a group training ride on Monday 19 May in Boyacá.
The news was confirmed by the Colombian Ministry of Sports on Facebook, “We join the voice of condolence of Colombian sport for the death of Jonathan Paredes, a cyclist who represented the country at a high let. His pedal strokes will be remembered in every corner of the country. We accompany their relatives and loved ones in this difficult time.”
Police report the tragedy occurred on the Tunja – Paipaat road, when a peloton including Paredes was hit and run over by a truck at high speed before the vehicle flipped over.
Paredes was killed upon impact, with his bike utterly destroyed. Three other riders were serious injured and transported to hospital.
Jonathan Paredes, won the Pan-American Road title in 2013 and went on to race professionally for several season before he failed a CERA EPO anti-doping test in 2017 and received a four-year ban from sport. He then retired from racing, earned a law degree and continued to train and participate in amateur gran fondo events.
