Greater Manchester Police and Tour de Manc organizers in England report a woman pedestrian died after a cyclist participating in the event crashed into her last Sunday.
“Everyone at Tour de Manc is truly devastated to learn that a pedestrian has died after a collision with a cyclist on our charity sportive last Sunday,” Tour de Manc organizer Danny Franks told the Daily Mail.
Police report the woman, 80, was struck while walking along the event route as the cyclist allegedly tried to pass another cyclist during 1000+ rider 165km sportive around greater Manchester.
“It is believed that the bike had gone to overtake another cyclist which was moving more slowly in-front,” police said in a public statement.
Emergency medical resources were called to the scene immediately and transported her to hospital with serious injuries, despite doctor’s best efforts she did not survive.
The cyclist suffered minor injuries, remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Cyclists who kill pedestrians by “dangerous cycling” may face life imprisonment in England under new Crime and Policing bill amendments, according to the The Guardian.
Any witnesses to the incident have been asked to come forward and assist police investigators.
