UPDATE: Police have identified the man who died in the crash as Steven Wilson.
On Sunday 49 year-old man participating in Etape Loch Ness in Scotland died from injuries sustained after crashing into a car at the 6000 rider event.
Organizer Malcolm Sutherland issued an official statement on Facebook, “It is with great sadness that we confirm a fatality occurred during yesterday’s Etape Loch Ness event. A 49-year-old man was involved in a collision with a vehicle next to the event area in Inverness shortly after midday. Despite receiving immediate medical attention from emergency services, he sadly died later in hospital.”
BBC reports the tragic crash involved a male driving a white BMW 120 M sedan. Additional details of the crash are not clear, with Police Scotland now investigating the incident and asking witnesses to come forward.
Etape Loch Ness is Scotland’s largest and most popular cycling event, allowing participants to ride 66 miles around the world famous loch on traffic-free roads.
This is the fourth cyclist to die while participating in an amateur event in April, with two deaths at the Tour of Flanders and one at the Mallorca 312.
