Canadian Adam Roberge won the epic Mallorca 312 on Saturday morning, one of the world’s most famous gran fondos with 8500 riders, but the event was marred by the tragic death of a 40 year-old British rider.
British coach Matt Bottrill posted on Facebook that it was one of his riders – Phil Williams – who died, “It is with such profound sadness that I write this message. I deeply regret to inform you that Phil Williams, a cherished member of Team Bottrill, tragically passed away following a fatal accident while riding in the Mallorca 312. This is an immense blow to all of us, and my deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.”
The Majorca Daily Bulletin reports Williams crashed on the Coll d’en Claret climb while riding between Valldemossa and Esporles. He then went into cardiac arrest, with emergency medics working feverishly to revive him while en-route to hospital in Palma. Unfortunately, he died before arriving at hospital.
Due to emergency vehicles on Mallorca 312 routes, organizers temporarily halted the event, with 1000’s of participants queued waiting to restart.
The incident occurred behind the leading group of riders, with pro gravel racer Adam Roberge (FELT UN1TD) winning the 312km race in 8:39:28, Lion Trommer claiming victory on the 225km route in 6:21:47 and David Lopez Garcia (CCARTANENC) taking the 167km win with a time of 4:38:24.
For the women it was Michela Santini winning the women’s 312km race in 9:49:15, Lucy Lee took the 225km title in 6:53:34 and Yessica Perez Torrente won the on the 167km route.
It is the third death of a gran fondo participant this month. Two riders, former French pro Stephane Krafft and an unnamed Dutch rider, died at the Tour of Flanders fondo on 5 April, both also from apparent heart attacks.
