UCI Gravel World Series racing returned to Italy’s Mediterranean island of Sardegna on Friday at the second Giro Sardegna Gravel race.
On routes of 117 and 76 kilometers graveleurs gave it their all to earn prized starting bibs for the 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships by finishing in the top 25% in their age/gender category.
25 year-old German pro Tim Wollenberg (PROTECTIVE FACTORY TEAM) took the overall win in the 117km event by out-sprinting Lukas Baum of Andorra after almost three and a half hours of racing. Georg Egger, also from Germany, finished third five minutes later to take the final podium step.
The women’s race also came down to a 2-up sprint, with multiple Italian MTB Champion Debora Piana (FOL MTB RACING TEAM), 36, winning by 0.25 seconds after 4:16:18 of head-to-head racing. Carlotta Borello had to settle for second place with Barbara Guarischi crossing the finish a minute later for third, both Italian riders.
On the 76km route it was former Italian pro Daniele Bruschi (TEAM STOCCHETTI) in the Men’s 50-59 category taking the overall win in 2:32:12. 29 year-old Mette Flecks (VELOCC) of Denmark won the women’s race in 2:51:18.
The 2025 UCI Gravel World Championships will take place next October in the Netherlands.
