According to multiple Spanish news sources, Civil Guard police report a tragic crash occurred during a group training ride near Calpe on Easter Sunday, with a father and son run over by an alleged drugged up 20 year-old automobile driver.
According to witnesses the tragedy happened around 11:30 at the tail-end of a 20 rider peloton, when an automobile coming from the opposite direction crossed over the center line and crashed into cyclists Jagoba Etxezarreta, 45, and his 14 year-old son Danel.
The impact was so severe Jagoba was thrown over the road guardrail and likely died instantly according to the Civil Guard. His son, however, was left lying in the road and was transported by SAMU units to Denia Hospital with a fractured femur.
After an on-scene drug test showed the male driver was under the influence of narcotics, Civil Guard arrested him on charges of homicide and other crimes.
The road where the crash occurred is widely used by cyclists heading out for a training ride according to Manuel Martínez, president of the local Benidorm Cycling Union. “Many groups pass through the area where the accident occurred daily. It is part of a regular route for many cyclists: locals and those on holiday,” he told TODOAlicante.
