Italy’s gran fondo organizers are off to a bumpy start this spring, with four popular events on the amateur circuit cancelled in the last few weeks.
Gran Fondo Garda Cycling on the shores of Lake Garda on 23 March was cancelled due to severe weather making the route unsafe for cyclists and support staff. Participants received the following organizer statement at the last minute: “THIS EMAIL is to inform you that the race is POSTPONED TO 2026. The weather today is constantly evolving with a continuous change in forecasts (first it rains a lot, then little, then a lot etc etc) but today the weather webs give that it will rain in the morning with low temperatures. The Municipal Administration of Garda, Giomas ssd and the Traffic Police, all of us can’t help but think about your safety, that of our motorcycle operators, on the road and everyone in general. Out of respect for everyone we cannot hold the event.”
Organizers for Medio Fondo Primavera planned 6 April in Irpino announced they were unable to host the event due to logistical and management deficiencies: “We do not want to propose an event with lower quality standards than previous editions and since a series of circumstances do not allow us to honor the commitment with the serenity of always we are forced to cancel the appointment. The decision does not concern the concomitance with other events but has rational bases related to the safety of the routes, organizational quality and management. 2025 will be a sabbatical year for the Medio fondo Primavera.”
Gran Fondo Terrevecchia Teatina on 25 April in the city of the same name was cancelled due to insurmountable organizational problems: “It is with deep regret that the Granfondo Torrevecchia Teatina Diemme Sport scheduled for April 25, 2025, will not take place. Despite the efforts made until last week, on the part of the organizers and the municipal administration, it was not possible to solve the problems encountered… We are sorry to give you this news, but without the necessary guarantees we cannot organize an event of such magnitude. We will do our best to return next year, with more enthusiasm and strength.”
Gran Fondo dei Nebrodi in Brolo planned for 27 April also fell victim to logistical and management issues: “The difficult decision was made after a careful evaluation of the logistical and managerial conditions – we read in the statement of Nebrodi Marine, the organizing company – which did not guarantee the safety and well-being of cyclists, organizers and spectators. We apologize for any inconvenience this news may cause and we would like to thank all those who have shown interest in the event. Our priority remains safety, for everyone.”
